Is your air conditioner in your car not quite up to snuff? If you have that feeling that your A/C isn’t as cold as it used to be or should be, you might want to have your A/C system serviced.
Refrigeration is the fluid/gas inside the system (often called freon) used to remove the heat from the air inside your car. The most common ailment of air conditioners is when some or all of your refrigerant leaks out. One common misconception is that air conditioners use up refrigerant… air conditioners do not actually use refrigerant. If it gets low, it is because of a leak. Ideally, a air conditioning system doesn’t leak at all. However, Refrigerant is a gas that is much thinner than air and can leak through the holes that air can’t even fit through. Even a good air conditioning system can leak a little throughout the year.
An air conditioning system uses a compressor that needs lubricating. The lubricant circulates through the system by the refrigerant. If your system has a slow leak, not only will it not be as cold, but your expensive compressor may be being damaged form a lack of lubrication.
Many times when air conditioners start to get warm, people assume that it is the compressor, so the ignore it. When the compressor fails from low refrigerant and a lack of lubrication, They assume they were right. However, if you service your system at the first signs of trouble, you can save yourself hundreds of dollars and the cost of replacing the compressor and other components.
